Foliar-applied fertilisers need water in the drop deposit

Foliar-applied fertilisers should remain dissolved on the leaf surface. Otherwise, the uptake of nutrients will stop. The relative humidity and two closely related properties of the foliar fertiliser determine the drying out of droplets and the concomitant crystallisation of nutrients. The two properties, deliquescence and efflorescence, and their value for the formulator are discussed by Adjuvants & Formulations.

Carrier-free formulations of nanopesticides

Supramolecular self-assembly is used as a tool to prepare carrier-free nanopesticides. By far most research into this approach is being conducted at Chinese universities.

Advocacy for certification of drift reduction adjuvants

A scheme to credit drift reduction adjuvants for their performance could help encourage their use as part of safe and efficient crop protection best practice. This can be read in a perspective paper that has briefly been summarized by Adjuvants & Formulations.

More news in this issue:

  • Multifunctional hydrogel trap for water and fertiliser capture
  • Clove leaf essential oil Pickering emulsion stabilized by modified waxy maize starch
  • Review of advanced 2,4-D herbicide delivery systems
  • Biopolymer microparticles for controlled release and mitigation of the volatility of 2,4-D
  • Natural polymers for environmentally safe delivery of pesticides
  • Uptake and translocation of organosilicon spray adjuvant in rice

Patents in brief

The patent literature reflects the developments in bio-based solvents. Recently published solvent compositions from Specialty Operations France that contain a bio-sourced carbohydrate are examples of this trend.

Adjuvants & Formulations also reports about activities of other companies as well as universities, such as:

  • Various adjuvants and adjuvant compositions (tank-mix as well as built-in)
  • SC formulation for active ingredients with low melting point
  • Chitosan-coated emulsion droplets in o/w emulsions of essential oils
  • Water-soluble dispersant with binder properties for film coating compositions
