Spray drift due to bag break up and the remedy for it

Coarse sprays are not a full guarantee against spray drift. Crosswind at boom height can break up the large spray drops into driftable fines. The American agricultural cooperative WinField United explicitly asks attention to this hardly investigated phenomenon. Adjuvants & Formulation reviews what is already known and what is still unknown.

Insight in developments of spray drop characterization methods

Drop size measurements must reliably reflect the performance of drift reduction agents. Research with various nozzles and spray solutions shows that different measurement techniques can yield diverging results.
Recently, a new technique has been added to the wide array of measurement methods: digital inline holography.

Wind and temperature and the risk of dicamba and 2,4-D injury

Dicamba damage in soybean is once again widespread in the USA this year, despite the required addition of a volatility reduction adjuvant to low-volatile dicamba formulations. Damage caused by 2,4-D is expected to increase the coming years. Weed specialists provide new insights into atmospheric conditions that are conducive to dicamba and 2,4-D off-target movement. Adjuvants & Formulations reports.

News in brief

Clariant has synthesized herbicidal fatty acid derivatives that can be used as alternative to pelargonic acid. These novel herbicides can be sprayed without adjuvants and are relatively easy to co-formulate. Adjuvants & Formulations presents the major findings of this work.

More news in this issue:

  • New hypothesis for superspreading phenomenon
  • Anionic-cationic surfactant synergism in microemulsions
  • Effect of ethylene oxide group in the anionic–nonionic mixed surfactant system on microemulsion phase behaviour
  • Antisurfactant behaviour of superspreader surfactant
  • Xylem sap contains potent surfactants
  • Structure simplification of natural products as approach in agrochemical discovery
  • User-safe and efficient nanoherbicide
  • Responses of 2,4-D resistant Brassica rapa biotype to various 2,4-D formulations and other auxinic herbicides
  • Iron as safener to reduce topramezone injury to bermudagrass

  • Self-spreading pesticides according to the Marangoni flow principle
  • Seed treatment is under discussion
  • Reflections on using pesticides – a global problem

Patents in brief

Monsanto (Bayer) seeks patent protection for concentrated 2,4-D and dicamba salt solutions with a stable build-in oil-type drift reduction adjuvant. These adjuvants are stabilised with selected emulsifiers. The drift reduction adjuvants are effective at low concentrations, which is critical in achieving stable emulsion and micro-emulsion formulations with the adjuvant and auxinic herbicide.

Adjuvants & Formulations also reports about activities of other companies as well as universities, such as:

  • Glufosinate plus PPO inhibitors
  • Potassium increases burn down effect of water-soluble herbicides
  • Overview of recent patent publications with brief summary
